What is Trackman and how do I use it for golf improvement?
The Trackman company was established in 2003 with the sole purpose of helping golf professionals and coaches understand more about the delivery of the club to the ball and the ball flight. The TrackMan golf radar helps to map over 25 key data parameters such as ball speed, attack angle, club path, face angle, spin rates and distance.
Radar technology is an integral part of golf instruction today. Whether it is used for golf swing lessons, analysis, or club fitting the golf radar and software are suited for use by professional trainers, coaches, and players of all levels.
I believe technology has a place in golf instruction however I do not use Trackman for every lesson I teach or every coaching session. I use Trackman when I need to gain a deeper understanding of what is happening in the swing to help guide the player to better positions. I also use it with my more experienced and elite players to apply pressure on them in practice by setting games and challenges on the unit. Trackman is also used in club fitting to ensure the player receives equipment best suited for them.
A picture paints a thousand words and is the very reason I use video analysis in lessons. Students better understand “feel vs real” when they see what they are doing and what I would like them to do. With phone camera technology it is easier than ever to get quality slow motion video footage, analyse in apps and provide an explanation on the teaching tee. From there I can easily send relevant videos of the lesson back to the student for them to review drills and information to apply in their own practice.
What is FocusBand and how do I use it for golf improvement?
The FocusBand headset provides neurofeedback which is a proven method to train the brain. It allows the player to experience a desired brainwave state using audio and visual feedback.FocusBand will train you to switch into a state of calmness while preparing for and executing your golf shots.
FocusBand is ideal for any golfer who struggles with calming their thoughts and centring themselves in the moment prior to hitting a shot.
I use FocusBand with students who wish to achieve a calmer mental and emotional state while playing golf. The feel and sensation that people get from using the device helps them when they are on their own out on the course. Through thoughtful coaching and training, students are able to free themselves from their thoughts and achieve the state of “Mushin” which is a Japanese word meaning “mind without mind.” Training to be calm and centred will give all golfers the opportunity to execute better shots, make better decisions and switch on and off during the round. This will ultimately mean expending less mental and emotional energy throughout the round.
FocusBand is used widely on tours around the world by professionals including Jason Day and Justin Rose utilising the benefits of training with this tool.
